Why can’t I
I’m asking myself why can’t I appreciate my website’s design for more than two months. I created the “Cherry” theme two months ago, which I used to replace the “Summer” theme which was made around two months before it.
Why? Why do I still love SimpleBits‘ design each time I come there? Is is the fact that I work on my site everyday, and by seeing the design each time, I’m getting more used to it… and I come to hate it? Dunno.
I would like to create a design that would be time-proof.
Is it normal to hate a design, when you see it 20 times a day? I guess it is.

I think there’s always the urge to make something better - to tweak things around. I think you just have to get to a point where you say “That’s enough” for a current design, and then if you feel the need to change something, change the entire design - theme, feel, layout etc.
Also, as the owner and designer, you’re always aware of any “flaws” - you think you should do stuff better. No one else notices that because they’re not as familiar with the site. Remember, Cederholm changed his design a bit not so long ago, so you’re not the only one.
I think, as david said, its an urge, its just how we as designers are. We look at the same design constantly and see things wrong with it that we could improve upon or we just plain get tired of it. It’s understandable, and since we have the power to change it, we do. I’m the same way :)
Yup it’s normal
Yes, it is normal to grow tired of your work. But at the same time, you have to see it the way others see it. And I don’t think you’re doing badly.
The good thing about feeling that way is that you always want to improve things. The desire to find the next better idea ultimately leads to a better product, on a larger perspective.
But beware, do not forget that the best designs are nothing without worthwhile content. :)
This is exactly why I started my Switch project (can now be seen here: http://painswitch.com/switch/) I got tired of people whining that I changed my design so often, that I decided to make a theme engine that would allow them to use the same layout for as long as they wanted, but still gave me the ability to change it every 19 days. I’ve since then started using stupid blog software. Maybe one day I’ll finish it..
So to answer your question fiz; who cares if you change your design every other day. It’s your site, do what you want. By the way, you should make a layout with a magic pink background and neon green text. That way the people will get sick of the design way before you, it’d be a nice change ;]
Markku, I know my content is not the best I could do ;) But thanks for the kind words.
it’s normal and i guess everyone experiences it, it doesn’t just happen to webdesigner. I currently have a free WP theme as this site of mine is just active, but I usually made my own layout, I was only satisfied for a while, some of the past layouts were only 1 month old. The thing is, I like to play with CSS and we surely like to make a better one, better than the previous design, right? It’s indeed normal :)
About Septor’s comment. Well I am the opposite of it, if the weblogger changes his/her layout oftenly then I will always be confused of what kind of layout i’ll see, if it’s better then my mood to read the weblog will be better hehehe … I like to see another people’s design. For me, Simplebits, stopdesign and Zeldman have the best designs, but about why I don’t get bored to see their designs even though they don’t change their layouts, I wonder.
