On laptops
I’m looking for a laptop. The two best choices I’ve got yet are:
- PC
- Intel Pentium M 740 FSB 533
1.731.8Ghz - 80GB Hard drive
- 1024MB RAM
- Mobility™ Radeon X600 128MB
- DVD/CD burner combo
- Price: $2,065.30 CDN + tax
- Mac
- 12′ inch Powerbook G4 1.5Ghz
- SuperDrive (DVD/CD burner)
- NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 (64MB DDR)
- 512MB RAM
- 80GB Hard drive
- Price: $1,899.00 CND + tax (student price)
The only thing that keep me from buying the mac is that Apple are supposed to change their PowerPC cpus to Intel’s ones. Plus, my iriver H10 isn’t mac-compatible… but did I mention that if I buy a Powerbook, I get a free iPod mini?
What do you think? Would buying a Mac at this time be a good idea?

There are 16 comments yet. Don't be shy.
I would go for the Mac. This transition to Intel is going to take a while to complete, and I expect software vendors to keep updating their PPC versions for the four years to come, probably more as in most cases it’s not very hard to support both architectures.
I second that.
I heard they are stopping the iPod minis for the new Nanos… Not sure if that affects your decision to buy or not, but figured I would throw it out there. One of the things that I am concerned about when I finally buy a Mac is losing all of my software.
Another problem with the Mac is that I have to use Photoshop, Dreamweaver and other expensive software which are *cough* easier *cough* to buy on a PC than on a Mac ;)
On another note, it’s fun to see that John Oxton wrote a blog post about Powerbooks almost at the same time as mine.
i would prefer the mac, its cheaper, and yeah, the intel thing will take a while
You definitely don’t need a X600 if you’re not gaming. A 64mb card would be plenty.
PC ALL THE WAY!!
If you’re a gamer go for the PC. If not go for the mac.
You can find PC apps alternative very easylly. And P2P also exist for mac. ;)
OK, now my mind is at:
PC: 30%
Mac: 70%
Now, what would be the best? 12″ Powerbook or 14″ iBook? Are iBooks so worst than Powerbooks?
Oh, another question: is 12″ a little too small?
Well, it seems that everyone forgot this post, so I’m going to tell you here anyway, I’m going for the PC, for various reasons.
I’m gonna buy it on friday, so if you’ve got last-time arguments to convince me not taking the PC instead of the mac, it’s time to tell ‘em folks :)
Get a real OS. Buy the mac.
Otherwise you’ll have to wait for the release of… well… something approaching Tiger on the PC. And then again, you’ll have to pay for it.
Mac Tiger is the best thing on earth, really! :P
Joël, I’m fine with winXP but I’m planning — that may please you — to install Linux on it ;-)
Thierry, I know, I’m using it every day.
And I realized, after seeing one of my teacher’s, that a 12″ Powerbook is way, way to small. I’d buy a 15″, but it’s much more expensive!
Linux on Mac is fine too ;)
And when you say 12″ is way to small, just ask yourself too small for what? OK, it’s 12″, but is 1024*768 not enough?
I really prefer having a smaller screen, but a lighter weight to carry. Just my opinion, of course…

12 inches is not really good for web design; 1024x768 is quite too small.
Take the pc and install MacOsX (if you read post on Computer Website, you will see it’s not a joke!)
I know I’m a bit late, but I’d definately recommend a mac. I’ve worked with PC’s for 10 years, and then I bought an ibook last year, and now I’ve almost abandonned my PC. I use it for web design as well. And graphics too. And music. OS X just seems like a much more natural environment to do these kinds of things. Another thing is that I was surprised at how easy it is to *cough* buy *cough* expensive software for OS X.
